Sulpur-crested Cockatoos

I thought I would share some photos of the Sulpur-crested Cockatoos that are current in our neighbourhood. Opposite our house is a tree covered in seeds, these birds just love the seeds and on some evenings there can be up to 10 to 15 birds all trying to get their share of dinner. They aren't even afraid when I walk up close and they take no notice of Charlie Cat (they are way too big for her).

These are highly intelligent mischievous birds that can problem solves and do the naughtiest of things, such as eat anything wooden on your home or drop sticks on your head!  These are the ones that can talk, if taught and are often found in captivity. However I much prefer to see these in the wild like this. They can live for more than 70 years - a big commitment if you have one as a pet! When a group they can make quite a noise as they "chat" to each other.  Interestingly, whilst they can talk "human" (if taught), they will never copy the sounds of any other bird - only us. No idea why.

This bird knew I was watching and kept on giving me cheeky looks.

Notice the red tips on the leaves - autumn is here and this tree is so pretty in autumn.

  2. How wonderful to get to see these birds in the wild. It amazes me to think of it. Here we have your basic sparrow, crow, blue bird, owl and hawk etc. All of them wonderful of course, but I would love to be able to have such beautiful birds native to where I live. Thanks for sharing. It was fun to see them. Hard to imagine you coming into fall with us coming in to spring.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. One minute it was summer and the next it was Autumn (Fall), as if changed by a switch. These are beautiful birds and have such characters, even when naughty. I also love the crows - we saw one yesterday at an outdoor restaurant stealing the sugar (those wrapped in paper) and eating it! Not healthy at all, but fun to watch it get up to mischief .

Hope your weekend is enjoyable :)

  3. While these birds can be great fun if they can talk, and to watch when they play, I really don't find their squawking to be enjoyable - it's so raucous! They are beautiful though :)

    1. Ours only make that noise in the evening or morning but generally they are well behaved.

  4. These photos are lovely. I would've loved to take some while we were there but the birds around Dan and Clara's were not cooperative! And, the ones at the koala preserve were caged. I was a little surprised at how unpleasant their calls are.

    1. These were happy to have their photo taken as they were too busy eating but they did look up at me when I "chatted" to them!! However we do have 2 that are often in our very large gum tree and are quite friendly.
