How many books do you own?

Source

In a recent survey in Britain about reading and books it was found that the average British home contained 138 books but more than 50% of these books have never been read.

How many books do you own?

What percent have been read by the family?

Are you still adding to your book collection?

If you had to recommend a book or books in your collection what would they be?

I have far too many books and sadly running out of space. To save money and to make sure I am not over run with books, I now rely on my local library for almost all my books and rarely buy books these days (excluding my Christian literature).  This way I still can maintain my joy of reading (and I read a lot of books per year) but no longer breaking the bank and we can move freely around the house without bumping into books!!

  1. I have a terrible addiction to books, and own hundreds of them. I, like you probably don't buy as many as I used to.
I suppose the internet plays a little into that, and the fact that the busyness of life seems to have slowed me down from being able to go to book fairs, and the fact that most of the kids are grown,so my passion to build this collection for our family isn't as pressing. I have often cleaned and thinned, and given many to our kids or friends; but there are still those fine old favorites that I cherish and hold on to. Books are good things aren't they?
    Blessings,

    1. I love secondhand book fairs and often cull my books and give them to charity and then buy more from book fairs! Books are my happiness !!!!!

  2. I am addicted to buying books too... We own hundreds of books, and yes, I keep adding to our collection. I think having lots of quality books (either in our own collection or in the special library we borrow from) is extremely important when raising children. I don't know what quantity of our books have been read. Certainly amongst the children books and reference books, most of them have been read, but amongst the adult books not so many have been read - Dan and I love reading but don't have *heaps* of time to do it - however I'm sure as the children get older they will get stuck into them and enjoy them! :)

    1. Books are so important for children and I too bought heaps for mine. However when they grew up I gave many of the books away to friends with young children. Now I only buy books that I really want to keep such as cookbooks.

  3. How do you know when or if to get rid of a book? I have some books that I am not sure I will ever read/use again (cookbooks), but I am afraid that I will regret parting with them.

    1. I cull those books I have no interest in reading again. I am also quite tough on myself. I often give my old cookbooks to my daughter-in-law and son so I know where it is if I need a particular book.

  5. Dear Jo, I also love to have books on every table and chairs and the bookcases. They look neat and inviting and make me feel happy! I love to read but with the internet and this blogging thing has slowed the book consumption down a wee bit.I also will use my library here in our town. I really enjoyed this!

    1. Books are comforting which is why I love them in the home. Homes without books are quite bare don't you think.

  6. We would have hundreds of books I guess and there is quite a few that haven't been read..... yet! But the children will no doubt make use of them in the years to come. Finding decent books at the library can be hard work (for children's books anyway) but we have found some real treasures from time to time...

    1. I bought lots of books when the children were small and gave many away to other young families when my children grew up. Now that I am only buying for myself I have decided to be more frugal. I don't see the point of buying books for myself that I will only read once. My library has a great selection. I often feel very spoilt.

  7. Almost ashamed to admit, but I have several thousand books. We are a family of bookworms, ten years ago when we moved I went through them and parted with several hundred, a decision I really regret now.
