Art friday: Holly Hobbie

Art Friday: Holly Hobbie

Were you a fan of Holly Hobby as a child?

As a child I loved the Holly Hobby character and can remember owning several things with the imagine of the blue Holly in her traditional floral bonnet (see below). It brings back warm memories of my childhood!!

Holly Hobby was created by Denise Holly Ulinskas, born 1944 in the USA. In the late 1960s, Hobbie sold distinctive artwork of a cat-loving, rag dress-wearing little girl in a giant bonnet to American Greetings. This series of illustrations became popular, and her originally nameless character became known as "Holly Hobbie”. The blue girl is probably the best known and always my favourite.

  2. Miss Holly says, "Those are very cute little pictures. I have rarely ever seen things about Holly Hobbie, but I really like it that she shares my name!"

:) I love Holly Hobbie, but it's really difficult to find Holly Hobbie things these days! Dolly is kind of a little Holly Hobbie girl herself, living up to her name with her bonnets and old-fashioned dresses!! ;)

    1. I am glad that Holly likes these - they are so cute compared to the many modern pictures of girls. You can buy the fabric on ebay as I was having a look, in fact ebay is probably the best place to find some of the more retro HH items these days.

  5. I love Holly Hobbie artwork too! :-) I had a few Holly Hobbie things as a child. The main one I remember was an ABC book. I think my all time favorite picture is the flower seller with her patchwork umbrella. From the ones you have here I also like the girl in yellow with the wagon of flowers and Holly Hobbie herself drinking tea with a friend. :-) Thank you for a pleasant little trip down memory lane.

  6. Jo,
As a child, I loved all things Holly Hobbie, which came about at least in part I think, by my dedication to the "Little House on The Prairie" books. I had a large H.H rag doll, and was overjoyed when I received a H.H bedspread for my birthday one year! My dear great-aunt Jennie, even sewed me a costume.

Thank you so much for sharing these pictures today :-)

    Blessings,
    Christine

    1. So glad you enjoyed these so much. I don't think I had very much in the way of HH but that didn't stop me dreaming about owning a few things with her delightful picture on. I was also a huge fan of Little House on the prairie and read the books many times.
