In memory of Elisabeth Elliot

Elisabeth Elliot has been an inspiration for many women around the world. She  passed away on the 15th of June aged 88 and has gone home to be with her Father.

In remembrance of her great work and her unfailing love for the Lord Jesus Christ, I thought I would gather up some of her quotes to share. She really was a woman that dedicated her life to the Lord and focused her energy in sharing that wonderful Message.

Her legacy is in hundreds of thousands of women like me… She called us all to see the empty promises of the world's definition of womanhood and to accept the contentment of womanhood as God designed it to be experienced” (quote Dannah Gresh)

Elizabeth Elliot uses her experiences as a daughter, wife, mother, widow, and missionary to bring the message of Christ to countless women and men around the world and even though she is gone, her books and messages live on and we can continue to benefit from her wisdom and love of the Lord Jesus Christ though her works.

“We have proved beyond any doubt that He means what He says—His grace is sufficient, nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. We pray that if any, anywhere, are fearing that the cost of discipleship is too great, that they may be given to glimpse that treasure in heaven promised to all who forsake.”

***

“The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian makes me a different kind of woman.”

***

“I have one desire now - to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it.”

***

“We are women, and my plea is Let me be a woman, holy through and through, asking for nothing but what God wants to give me, receiving with both hands and with all my heart whatever that is.”

***

“God is God. Because he is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what he is up to.”

***

“Waiting on God requires the willingness to bear uncertainty, to carry within oneself the unanswered question, lifting the heart to God about it whenever it intrudes upon one's thoughts.”

***

When (our plans) are interrupted, his are not. His plans are proceeding exactly as scheduled, moving us always (including those minutes or hours or years which seem most useless or wasted or unendurable)"

***

“Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don't need to search any further for security.”

***

“Restlessness and impatience change nothing except our peace and joy. Peace does not dwell in outward things, but in the heart prepared to wait trustfully and quietly on Him who has all things safely in His hands.”

***

Experience has taught me that the Shepherd is far more willing to show His sheep the path than the sheep are to follow. He is endlessly merciful, patient, tender, and loving. If we, His stupid and wayward sheep, really want to be led, we will without fail be led. Of that I am sure.

***

"I really don't think — you are in a bargaining position with God. He is the Master. He is the Commanding Officer. It is not for you to have input. It is simply for you to accept the orders as the the orders are given"

  1. There is a lot of food for thought there! Elisabeth had an amazing life, and it is easy to look at our own lives and think we have missed out, are not so blessed, or are not as spiritual - but God has different plans for each of us, and we must remember to be thankful for saints like Elisabeth, while remembering to be content with our own lives, and looking to Him for strength and encouragement to continue on with our own lives with constant thankfulness! As Elisabeth found, He is faithful - no matter what!

    1. Being content with one’s life (no matter how quiet) is a battle for most of us from time to time — other people seem to be having more fun or doing more interesting things (grass is always greener over the fence!) but I have learnt that a quiet life is far less of a hassle and not as stressful so I am quite content to have “quiet weekends” where nothing happens compared to the running about that others do for enjoyment!! Perhaps it is an age thing (like wearing sensible shoes!!).

  2. It's easy to put people like this on a pedestal, but we must keep in mind that she was also human and I'm sure she had her failings. If we put people like her on a pedestal, it is easy to feel like we are worthless and huge failures. She did appear to live a life of faithfulness and service to her Lord, and that is something to praise the Lord for. I am sure there are many, many women like her, women who serve the Lord throughout their days and yet we know nothing about them - we must also thank the Lord for all those women who work tirelessly incognito to serve the Lord and His people. I am thankful to have known of this woman, and her words are an encouragement in a dark world. It would behoove each of us to render service and give our hearts to the Lord with full abandon - not because of Elizabeth Elliot, but because that is what the Word of God encourages us to do! :)

    1. I agree that it is important to not put women like Elisabeth Elliot on a pedestal — and when I read her books or quotes, she always came across as a humble and meek woman. I have been blessed to know women who, like Elisabeth have served the Lord faithful — quietly and anonymously — however for many modern (younger) women, many do not have these excellent role models in their lives (partly because they are first generation Christians) and turn to people like Elisabeth Elliot, Michelle Duggar (and family) or some of the very popular bloggers (who go off and write books) and place these women on pedestals because they haven’t been surrounded by godly women as we have been so fortunate to have been.
