Modern day modesty

In modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing (1 Timothy 2:9)

There is a funny idea that dressing modesty is to dress frumpy and looking unattractive, to remove any "womanly" features so to avoid any form of sexuality. Modesty has nothing to do with being dowdy.

When one dresses modestly it simply means covering up so others don't have to see plunging necklines, lots of leg and flesh — to not dress in a manner than will attract the attention of men and cause them to lust. It has nothing to do with looking ugly and plain and it doesn't mean you can't wear colour or lace, modern designs or something very pretty.  This series of photos are of the Duchess of Cambridge on her recent tour of India — she has made modest look beautiful, elegant, graceful and feminine. Her hair is beautifully (but simply) done and her jewellery is also very tasteful (not tacky).  Notice the hemline, it is now longer than it use to be after the Queen "suggest" it should be lower to  look more modest.

Her look is not the "Hollywood look" that is more about showing as much flesh as possible and has nothing to do with  being feminine and pretty. It is so encouraging to see a young woman dress so beautifully and classy and yet modestly. She is a modern young women that shows those who struggle with ideas of modesty that it can be done and still look good.

However, one can dress completely modestly but her heart is not in the right place — our clothing and accessories should never dominate our lives, attempt to draw attention, eat up our money and become an idol. It is what is in our hearts that truely matters most, it is all about "women professing godliness, with good works". (1 Timothy 2:10). Modestly is about our behaviour and attitude and not just about clothing — our clothing sends the message of being discreet and feminine, but our actions demonstrate our desire to do good works for God.

"Modesty is more than just a hemline, it is an interior disposition that influences not only our dress, but our thoughts and actions"

(by Leah Darrow)

Modesty means propriety. It means avoiding clothes and adornment that are extravagant or sexually enticing. Modesty is humility expressed in dress. It’s a desire to serve others, by not promoting or provoking sensuality. Immodesty, then, is much more than wearing a short skirt or low-cut top; it’s the act of drawing undue attention to yourself. It’s pride, on display by what you wear. (C. J. Mahoney)

Modesty isn't about covering up our bodies because they're bad, modesty isn't about hiding ourselves . . its about revealing our dignity. (Quote by Jessica Rey)

    1. She certain does but sadly some of the fashion leaders say she isn't a trend setter and not daring enough - :(

  4. The Duchess of Cambridge is one of the best (if not the best) dressed women in public life. Her style is impeccable -- Carmen loves her choices and has bought outfits to emulate it. She'll be pleased to know that you wrote a blog on her! I hope that the Duchess continues to set a positive and beautiful example that continues to elevate and not degrade women.

    1. I think Carmen and I have similar tastes when it comes to clothes :))) I think she will continue to look beautiful and elegant even when its not the trend of other famous women and that is wonderful - the influence from the Queen has also been very positive. :)

  6. I would love to see more young women dress with modesty instead of thinking that the more skin they show the more attractive they look. Great post! BTW, I am popping over from Titus 2 Tuesday Blog Hop!!

    1. I agree - doesn't the Duchess so much better and elegant covered up rather than showing skin - she looks like a lady and makes modest look very stylish indeed. Thanks for dropping in :)

  7. There was a  survey of men on the subject of womens clothing , and  the survey shows that 'tight clothing is at least as much of a potential problem for men as skimpy clothing.'
One man said: “I would say the number one problem is any garment that is form fitting,be it  ,---, skirt, dress, shirt, whatever. Anything that is tight, no matter how long it is.”
Another said: ...”tight clothing. Oh, it may very well be covering but it is revealing the shape in a woman. This can be even more tantalizing to a man.”
SHORT SKIRTS AND SHORT DRESSES AND SHORTS hold a very serious potential for lust for men. One man said, “The higher up on a woman’s leg, the more lustful/tempting it becomes.”

    1. I always think the tights that women wear as outwear to be highly questionable, especially when they wear blouses/sweaters/jumpers that aren't long enough to cover the bottom. They may be covered but nothing is left to the imagination.

  8. I really like what you've shared here. I also appreciate the wonderful pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge. She looks so elegant and feminine. Your words about modesty were quite meaningful. They have helped me to have a better understanding of just what modesty is. Thanks so much for sharing. You're my neighbor over at CornerstoneConfessions.

  12. Thanks for your post! I agree with you about modesty and cringe when I see young women wearing such suggestive clothing. I was appalled to see what young (supposedly Christian) women wore to church at the church I previously attended. There's something amiss when Christian women can't be distinguished from worldly women by their dress. The dresses in your photos are just beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Blessings, Janet

  13. I love the clothes she chooses - they are usually so beautiful and feminine, as you said. Some of them have been a bit high above the knee - I really do prefer the longer ones she wears - they are just so pretty.

    1. The Queen has requested the length to be lowered and they appear to have been - I think all the ones she wore in India were below the knee and how nice they look.
